Burkhard Körner (*1983) is a choreographer, theater maker, dancer, performer and singer from East Germany.
After volunteering at a psychiatry unit in France for one and a half years he was studying Culture and Theater Studies at the University Leipzig (D), Elementary Music and Dance Education at the Carl-Orff-Institut / Mozarteum University in Salzburg (A) and Choreography at the SNDO (AHK) in Amsterdam (NL).
Since 2011 Burkhard Körner is staging his own choreographic creations began at the intersection of theater, dance, voice and music in various theaters in Amsterdam and Berlin at a.o. Frascati Theater Amsterdam, Veem House for Performance Amsterdam, Uferstudios Berlin and Dock 11 Berlin.
His works are investigating questions of the individual within a collective and seek ways to translate memories into various forms. They act in a transformative framework to provide a lasting experience for the audience.
Trained as a classical singer for many years, Burkhard is focusing in his last creations on voice as (choreographic) material by exploring the voice as an ephemeral object within the frame of the gallery.
In collaboration with Rika Weniger and Noah Voelker he created the oral-history project Laden der un-erhörten GeschichteN / Store of un-heard Stories (2018/19) and the theater evening Wie macht man gute Kunst für Ostdeutsche? / How to make Good Art for East Germans? (2020/21) which explore the question of East German identities.
He also works as a dramaturg and artistic advisor for Jija Sohn (Boulevard Den Bosch 2023), Rika Weniger (Transit Kunstlabor Neubrandenburg 2021), Petar Sarjanovic (Batard Brussels 2020, Impulstanz Vienna 2021), Theatergroup SEPTEM MULIERES (2016-2021), among others.
He collaborates closely with Andrea Voets, Jija Sohn, Noah Voelker, Rika Weniger, Olga Tsvetkova, Annefleur Schep, Marc Philipp Gabriel and the GeneticChoir ensemble.
Furthermore, he performs in pieces by a.o. Paul Elliman (TENT Rotterdam), Tino Sehgal (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam), Miyuki Inoue (Sandberg Institute Amsterdam), Samara Hersch, Benjamin Kamino (DAS Theater & Choreography Amsterdam), Olga Tsvetkova (Dansateliers Rotterdam), Clara Amaral (Paradiso), Hisako Horikawa (Frascati Theater), Matej Kejžar (Melkweg Theater) and Maria La Ribot (Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam).
During Burkhard's time at the SNDO he had a.o. regular workshops with Igor Dobričić, Keren Levi, Katerina Bakatsaki, Aitana Cordero, Katie Duck, Mårten Spångberg, Benoît Lachambre, Matej Kejžar, Bruno Listopad, Jeroen Fabius, Nicole Beutler, Jeanine Durning, Robert Steijn, Ria Higler, Gonnie Heggen, Kirstie Simson and Suprabto Suryodarmo.
In 2015 Burkhard Körner was nominated for the ITs Krisztina de Châtel Award at the ITs Festival Amsterdam.
Since 2016 he is giving workshops in Voice & Body Work at a.o. TSEKH Moscow and Müllerhof Mittweida (D).
